Devised and performed by a dozen teens, Scripting Survival is a darkly comic meta-theatre piece where a frustrated Producer tries to sanitize two real Asian tragedies: Time Still Turns the Pages (年少日記), about a Hong Kong brother’s academic despair; and Black Box Diaries (黑箱日誌), journalist Shiori Ito’s fight against rape culture. As the Producer demands "hopeful edits," chairs transform into dinner tables, courtrooms, rooftops. The narratives resist simplification until a janitor’s testimony and a brother’s diary reveal how small voices can crack oppressive systems. True hope, the Producer realizes, lies not in rewriting pain, but honoring those who clean the mess.
